Holiday home for single person

The client was a middle-aged working professional, who wanted his holiday apartment designed for relaxation, light entertainment and space for an extra guest. The original floor plan showcased three bedrooms and a tiny bathroom. The entire space was opened up to reveal the bedroom doors, which posed a privacy problem. His brief included creating zones without completely the closing off the space, relocating the bathroom and making it larger than the original. He was happy to sacrifice a bedroom in order to create more space in his apartment. He also wanted a workspace. He insisted on having an aquarium because of his love of ornamental fish. We extended the wall by the stairwell landing to connect with the pillar, effectively closing off the bedroom areas and creating a corridor. It also allowed us to have more wall space for the bathroom. We installed sliding wooden slat doors along the full length of the corridor. This allowed for privacy but also the flexibility of opening up space if need be or closing it when there are guests around. The aquarium serves as a separation between the living space and kitchen diner. It was also important to have transmission of light from the large windows in the living space through to the kitchen and dining areas. The aquarium allows for light transmission and also adds an interesting source of light when it's lit.
