Hope is a Good Egg

  • Jake Beare

Logline: A single father dealing with the perils of unemployment and parenthood with the help from an egg. Premise: How would you raise your daughter at the brink of eviction? Synopsis: Jerry and Hope are up for the school run but Jerry in true Jerry fashion burns Hope’s eggs. Jerry notices Hope’s goldfish gently kissing the top of the fish bowl. Jerry realises that the fish is dead due to Hope forgetting to feed it. Jerry is extremely angry with Hope’s lack of responsibility. On the way to Hope’s school Jerry lectures Hope on responsibility and the reasoning behind why she will not get another fish. The following evening Jerry gives an egg to Hope in order to teach her responsibility. Jerry states that if she looks after the egg for 2 weeks then she might be able to get a new pet. At first Hope doesn’t buy into her father’s vague challenge but over the course of the evening she starts to get tempted by the egg. Jerry has to rush to a job interview leaving Hope to her own devices but he clearly states to Hope not to use the cooker. Hope wants to make her father happy so she decides to make her dinner and defy er father’s wishes. Hope ends up burning most of the food in the fridge and when Jerry comes home after another bitter rejection. He is furious. Jerry sends Hope to her room. Hope feels extremely guilty for going against her father and apologises. Hope decided to be on her best behaviour and try hatch this egg anyway she can mostly by getting inspiration off different animals such as: the duck sitting on the egg or the kangaroo slotting its infant in its pouch. After a handful of more rejections Jerry gets his card declined by a shop keeper and gets rejected from another key job, he has hit rockbottom. When he gets home Hope cheekily comes up to him implying it’s been 2 weeks and she is due a pet. Jerry bursts Hope’s ‘hope bubble’ and tells her that eggs don't hatch. This shocks hope to the core as she has never seen her father that upset. That evening Hope creeps into Jerry’s office where she finds him sleeping. Hope discovers the final eviction notice on Jerry’s desk. Finally she isn’t int he dark about he family’s financial difficulties. The next morning while Jerry is packing a lot of his office away for the inevitable eviction he gets a knock at the door. Hope walks in presenting a plate. She uncovers the plate and its a perfectly formed fried egg. Jerry smiles. Statement of Intent: I wrote this film to advertise the power of parental love and the lengths a parent will go through for the health and safety of there child. Even in the harshest/stressful of environments my protagonist still priorities raising his daughter with good values. Irrespective of there financial troubles my protagonist’s daughter is a smart, kind and compassionate human being due to her father’s care and the maturing experience of losing her mother. If anything this film is an ode to my parents and what they do for me.
