This project focuses on the creation of mesmerising almost meditative atmosphere through translating the ever-changing environment of the Scottish Highlands. It aims to remind people to take a step back and feel both humbled and inspired. In an increasingly digitized and overwhelming world there is a strong desire from consumers to re-engage with the natural environment. The consideration of a bigger picture and the patterns of everyday life have an ability to put daily concerns into perspective and integrate a sense of mindfulness into everyday life. These ideas are supported by research into the ‘Overview effect’ and by the creative organisation, PATTERNITY. They argue the significant power in understanding these relationships. I have investigated these ideas by interpreting the fluctuating light and landscape of the Scottish Highlands. Particularly the soft, temperamental gradients and colours which can be found here. I have developed design work that evokes a calming sense of scale and atmosphere through the use of dyeing and monoprint techniques. By further incorporating organic stitch and resist details with a patchwork-like quality I aim to bring a sense of comfort and intrigue; encouraging the viewer to observe more closely. This design collection aims to generate a mesmerising almost meditative character which reminds us of to take a step back and be humbled and inspired to experience an ever-changing environment. These pieces are intended to be used within a variety of interior settings, acting as a prompt to assist in helping people to connect to these notions more often.
