In case you missed it, checks are having a moment right now. Not just any old checks, though. We’re talking ultra-trad, British-country-manor prints – all with a savvy AW17 twist, of course (and no riding crop necessary). Expect to see your wardrobe imminently awash with houndstooth, tartan and old-school Prince of Wales patterns – naturally the team here at ASOS are all over it. See how they’re wearing heritage checks their way…

Bottoms up

If you’re making your beginner's foray into checks, the best place to start is with some stylish trews, because checks and tailoring just go. Like Bella, ease it down and make it more relaxed by pairing your patterned piece with casj staples. A logo tee is a street-style win, and skate sneaks will mash up the influences. Finally, a cosy, off-white, teddy-fur coat adds some interesting texture and bling-bling drop earrings give that needed dash of fancy.

Double or nothing

Introducing the coolest suit you’ll ever lay your eyes on. Yep, there’s nothing standard going on with this orange checked two-piece, featuring black contrast piping. It’s all about playing with proportions here – a collarless longline jacket with three-quarter sleeves and high-waisted, drop-crotch trousers are a match made in heaven. Victoria has all eyes on the double act by keeping the rest of her outfit simple with a classic white tee, high-top Converse and layers of subtle gold jewellery.

Return of the mac

Let Sherlock Holmes be your style inspiration for AW17 and update your trusty trench with swish, monochrome houndstooth. To stop it veering too much into '19thcentury detective' territory, pare the print down with super-casj staples for a balanced look. Like Liz, layer your coat over a high-neck knit, mom jeans and some black sneaks. So good.

Clash of the titans

Blair Waldorf, watch out. This print-clash outfit from Nicole is bringing the major preppy points to rival Queen B herself. It’s all about choosing a few loud staples in muted colours to layer up. A checked wool skirt (with slammin’ pearl detailing) works well under a monochrome dogtooth coat, but keep the rest of the outfit plain and simple. A black roll-neck and pointed backless slippers seal the deal.

Purple rain

One thing to learn from our heritage checklist? It’s all about going against the grain. Debbie throws out the style rulebook with her flashy, bright purple AW17 take on heritage checks, by wearing the top back to front and turning the high-neck structure into a collar by leaving the zip undone. Add a leather skirt to mash up the good-girl checks and finish with some banging accessories (striped, peep-toe booties and an 80s-style waist belt).

Coat check

Winter is coming… Well, sort of. And Jessica is all ready for it with her layered, sports-chic-meets-countryside-walk get up. This houndstooth coat has a built-in zip-up varsity sweat, so keep the rest of your outfit chill – think black skinnies and chunky buckled ankle boots. Thumbs way up.
