How Personal Is Personal Taste?

  • Joshua Stammers

Is our taste truly our own? In society, taste navigates the way we interact with our peers and how we express our likes and dislikes. But where does the phenomenon of taste come from? Taste is something we become aware of and develop throughout our lives. As we age we refine our taste, we become harder to please. This also comes in to consideration with social class. At what point to we notice taste and how it manifested itself into our reality? Can something so personal, and so unique to our individuality be replicated or adapted by tens of thousands or even millions of other people, taste can be manipulated, confused or marketed to suit others, which merits the question, is our taste truly our own?
