I Am Angry Editorial Piece

  • Max Cygnaeus Ljungqvist

An editorial piece exploring masculinity and gender norms through the words of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Brief:
Choose a text and produce three different editorial products, each with a different tone of voice. By reconsidering, redesigning and republishing one text into different visual perspectives, the text will take on different meanings.
Solution:
I did this by focusing on particular elements of the text every time and choosing certain imagery and graphics that would suit the perspective. The text used is a transcript of the TedX talk ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
This booklet was based on the concept of fragile masculinity, and the patriarchy's role in society's gender norms. I chose to name this booklet 'The Fragile Egos of Men: I am Angry'. The perspective is reflected in the bold typeface and layout, with harsh contrasting colours, and striking imagery of hyper masculinity.
I wanted the booklet to be large and take up a lot of space, both physically, and metaphorically. In a sense, some pages and words are man-spreading while claiming their space.
