i-solated

I-SOLATED is a project about individuals’ experiences with their identity in isolation throughout the COVID 19 Pandemic. A series of etchings based on 10 interviewees’ experiences, immortalising them in metal. I created a website displaying them in the form of a virtual collage. Through bringing these disparate experiences together I wish to form a sense of togetherness that explores both the singular and collective experiences of identity in isolation while at the same time making the work available to the very people this work will resonate with the most, those still isolating.

Research & Proccess
I followed ethnographic frameworks to conduct 10 interviews, drawing and taking notes as the interviewees spoke. I recorded my drawings and notes into short, animated videos. I found the interviewees through various social media posts in both my personal accounts and on public groups and forums to do with covid-19 isolation. Once the notes were collated, I picked one quote from each interview that I found visually impactful and representative of their story. From this I developed an illustration, etched it onto steel and made my final outcome, a series of 10 etchings exploring individuals’ struggle with identity and isolation.
