Icon Painting

  • Hannah Doggett

I was lucky enough to attend a Grampus Heritage placement in Cyprus, funded by Erasmus+. During the 32 days, a small group of us were taught traditional Cypriot skills to increase their sustainability. Icon painting is an ancient form of sacred art that is now part of the contemporary culture in Cyprus. I chose to paint Saint Margaret of Scotland, a charitable Christian who mothered four Scottish kings. I really enjoyed this project, and it was again very different to anything I've done before. Trying to keep to the traditional icon style was quite difficult but made the painting more interesting. It was also painted on raw wood, which needed to be sanded down and primed, and added texture to the paint.
