Indigo Magazine, Palatinate (Durham's Student Newspaper)

Palatinate (Durham's student newspaper) prints fortnightly during term time, and has a live and active website. Indigo is Palatinate's arts and lifestyle pull-out. In this role I managed and liaised between all section editors within Indigo: Books, Stage, Music, Film & TV, Fashion, Features, Travel, Food & Drink, Creative Writing, and Visual Arts. I also coordinated with the main paper section editors to ensure avoidance of overlapping content.

I took a leading role in some of our biggest feature pieces, including an investigation into the use of the drug modafinil among Durham students, an examination of the city's growing LGBTQ scene, and an interview and photoshoot with Durham's University Challenge team.

When I first begun as Indigo editor I created our first Facebook page and Twitter account. Through our social media platforms I created the popular regular feature of 'Monday music'? in which I share a song every Monday. I also used these platforms to share particularly strong or topical articles as well as advertise vacancy openings within the paper. Every time we printed I shared the visually striking front cover to garner interest.

I wrote an editorial piece for our print edition, sourced our front-cover images, and checked over every section for aesthetic consistency and factual and grammatical accuracy.

My time working within student journalism has given me both a short lens focus on fine detail and a long lens appreciation of the workings of an entire paper. I am good at working independently and as part of a team, reporting to Palatinate's editors-in-chief. I took part in a brief Media Law training afternoon and I am aware of copyright issues surrounding the use of images. I have fantastic IT skills: on top of proficiency in Microsoft Office software, I am capable using Apple InDesign and the online uploading site WordPress.
