INFINITE GAME OF CHANCE

  • Grace Teo
This circular book is a response to The Lottery of Babylon by Jorge Luis Borges to reinterpret the story via imagery, text and grid systems.

The author describes the role of chance in one's life as lottery-like — an 'infinite game of chance' with each encompasses an equal chance. Life as a gamble/game. Probability or Chance? Inspired by GO — Winning this board game requires multiple layers of strategic thinking. The imagery was a recreation of the game the Professional 'Go' Player Lee Se-do vs AlphaGO who lost 4–1 to artificial intelligence. The lines on the board were then interpreted to the equal grid system that multiples in the book. Opposite to many early gamble games, a coin is placed on a gridded mat to make a win. The contrast of the probability and opportunity to 'win' is introduced in the reader's experience that is interrupted by the multiplying grid that forces the words to hyphenate and the circular format introduces a chance for the reader to find the right starting point to read it.
