Insects Within

  • Rachel Hopkins

This collection of fabric samples for a high end fashion context explores insects' ability to camouflage themselves within nature through colours and markings, disguising themselves to appear unattractive or concealed to their prey. Nature has always been the most significant source of inspiration for my designs, as the beauty and detail within the natural world brings fluidity into my drawing, beautifully translatable onto the body. Drawing is a dominant focus of my work and a passion of mine, which allows me to capture my theme intricately turning insects, which are often seen as 'ugly', into something beautiful through colour and detail. Within this collection I have used this skill to illustrate in a realistic way, exploring my own ways of camouflaging insects within foliage to manipulate the eye. Screen printing and digital printing are the processes i have used to translate my designs onto fashion fabrics and the placement of my drawings onto the body is carefully considered to provide maximum impact.
