‘Inside Out’ is my final university collection inspired by my response to growing up with chronic digestive issues with an unknown diagnosis. Learning about these intrinsic organs allowed me to become more accepting of my body’s functioning. The collection should inspire people to embrace how amazing our body’s inner workings are. We are made up of skin, bags and fluids that are peculiar and indecent but complete an incredible act: keeping us alive. These shapes are mirrored in garments signalling respect to the tasks they enact. Great bulging, swollen silhouettes, created with delicate and textured materials are reformed into more structured pieces signifying how our organs keep working and moving despite sometimes becoming weak and tired. Our digestive system has the utmost resilience. These intestinal organs depict seemingly unnatural aqua colours that I have plucked and applied with the reds, nudes and browns expected from the body. Along with screen printing, the collection features unconventional knit and quilting techniques evoking feelings of physical and mental cramp-like discomfort translating them into whimsical features.
