International Charette: Interior Design for Generations (2nd Year) 2017

  • John Solis

World Interiors Day (WID) is an annual event created by International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) in order to spotlight the field of Interior Architecture/Design. The event engages the design community to explore creativity, imagination, vision and passion in relation to the role of Interiors in society, culture and our future built environments.  “The theme of WID for 2017, “Interiors Design for Generations” seeks to consider design for all people, tapping into the comprehensive knowledge needed to foster a greater connection between the built environment, its occupants and time. As global life expectancy continues to rise, the Interiors profession increasingly faces the challenge of creating spaces that serve the multiplicity of current generations, addressing matters of accessibility, sustainability and functionality to promote well-being and facilitate human advancement.”  In order to celebrate WID, our Universities are teaming to participate in a five-day charette to allow students of varied skill levels to work together in a collaborative environment for a self-directed, intercultural and integrative applied learning experience. Objectives:  * Create connection and discover shared similarities within dissimilar social/cultural and geographic experiences  * Develop a foundational understanding and basic application of design decisions based on design psychology  * Acquire long distance interpersonal skills: intercultural sensitivity, respect and work ethics  * Foster positive working relationships within a culturally diverse group  * Develop skills to listen, value and be inspired by the opinions of others  * Reach a consensus on a design language and solution considerate of all concerned parties  * Generate creative and prompt problem solving skills in a reduced time span Method:  Utilising the varied opportunities for distance communication you will explore the design problem and apply design psychology methodologies to its solutions. Your groups will consist of students from the multiple academic institutions with peers of varied academic levels. All parties have been guided through the same basic design psychology exercises to support your exploration. It is your group’s responsibility to determine leadership, format program, develop collaboration methods and distribute process work-loads, in order to produce a creative and expressive final submission. Although this is a rudimentary application of design psychology, it will begin your path to understanding the methodologies for professional application. Remember: this experience is focused on process.
