Interview | Choreographer & Dancer Dada Masilo: 'I want the viewer to feel everything – the joy, the pain, the sadness, the grief. But it starts with me'

  • Shirley Ahura

In the run up to her bold reimagining of the ballet classic Giselle, I talked to acclaimed South African dancer & choreographer Dada Masilo about the art of story (re)telling, empowering women & using dance to break down cultural barriers.

It’s important for me, not just as a woman, to claim my space and be equal in the world, but as a human being.
'I hate boxes, I always have. The most important thing for me is that I have to learn and know the rules of classical ballet. If I learn and know the rules, I find that I am in a better position to break them.'
If I’m not able to be vulnerable on stage, then it just won’t translate to the audience. I have to accept that I’m not just a body in space, but a human being allowing someone to come into this space, and share it with me.
