Investing the emergence of Afro-Brazilian poetry in Sao Paulo's marginalised communities

  • Leila Hashemi
In 2015 I conducted a research project investigating peripheral women's poetry in São Paulo funded by the Santander International Affiliates scheme. Spending two months living in Brazil I conducted interviews with contemporary poets, and focused on an anthology of twenty black women poets from São Paulo, which was unprecedented due to the limited access women from the poorest areas in the city have to quality education and childcare. To progress my research I networked independently in order to build and strengthen relationships with poets and activists, whilst also attending poetry slams and events.
