It’s Just Too Noisy is a short story written and illustrated by Kathryn Lawes. The aim of this book was educational, to engage children into making their own choices and to determine how the story would play out. The Story was written to help children understand how to focus when they find things difficult within the classroom environment. The situation reflected in this short story is when children find the room is too noisy to concentrate. This theme is portrayed throughout the book by subtle suggestive use of characters. To begin with Barney is disturbed by his friend building his shed. To resolve this distraction Barney tries to move away, this is in reference to a child moving seats away from a particularly distracting child. Another tactic Barney uses is to ask the band to play a little quieter. This it representing the idea of a large group of children at a table chattering, the objective is to encourage children to be able to politely ask to reduce noise levels. The final situation is of a woodpecker tapping away at his home, this is to represent annoying behaviour such as tapping a pencil or banging feet. Barney’s solution to this issue is to cover his ears. The aim behind the outcome is to educate children that yes by covering your ears this may work, however then you may not be able to hear other important instructions from the teacher. The teacher in this case is played by the character Big Owl. Barney rabbit asks Big Owl for help; this is showing the child asking the teacher for help as they are struggling to cope in the current environment. Big owl then teaches Barney how to relax and ignore others behaviour so they can concentrate on their work. By having various scenarios, each one encourages a different solution to the problem that the child could encounter. By creating this book as a choice book, if they choose the wrong option, the story will play out the consequential action. This encourages children not to lash out or scream and shout as the incorrect outcomes represented in the book show negative situations in which Barney regrets his actions. Overall the book is designed to create an engagement of learning with the child at a level that is playful and easy to relate to.
