Project made together with a multimedia biotechnical designer that created the “Kombucha leather”, a material similar to real leather, biodegradable, easy to grow even at home. This material is made with fermented black tea, that becomes a SCOBY agent (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) that is fed and raised with a sugary organic tea, until it is thick enough to be dried and used as a solid piece of material.
My challenge as a designer was to combine this material with a regular textile to create a wearable piece where the characteristics of this vegan leather would be expressed, softer and gentle in contact with the skin, transparency, flexibility and resistance.
