80% of every £1 spent in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey leaves the borough. By designing a currency exclusive to Kingston, the notes encourage members of the public to spend their money within the borough therefore keeping the money circulating within Kingston to further benefit the community. As a proposal for a new currency, four themed notes reveal the known side of the borough, backed with the less recognised and unfamiliar. The notes are inclusive to the whole community, drawing on rich cultural and historical moments from Kingston’s past. For example, the £20 note is based on the theme of The River, depicting the recognised Kingston Bridge, backed with less familiar ‘Opheila’ pre-raphaelite painting by John Everett Millais , which was painted in the Hogsmill river of Kingston.
