A typeface project inspired by hammer and nails. Aiming to encourage the audience to do what they want or planned but have not started yet.
Brief & Problem
Create a typeface to produce an A2 poster and a selection of assets for Instagram
First Letter
From the workshop, I selected these 3 a. The first one has a particular angle and the flat head made it looks interesting while the second one seems delicate and nice overall, and the final one is spooky like Halloween.
Decisions about the typeface
I decided to go with the first letter a which is now digitally in the middle. It has the best form and unique feeling to it. The pointy ending and rigid form make it feel strong. I made a couple of letters in the same theme so that it will fit in the poster I wanted to make.
Poster Design
I wonder a lot about ‘what does the a reminds me of’ and when I started to play with it, combining the a with a small L makes a hammer. So I started to research about hammers and came across the phrase “nail the hammer on the head” and that became my starting point.
Assets for Instagram
I wanted to emphasise the action of hitting the nail with the hammer and the Instagram carousel is perfect for it so I experiments. I could not divide the wording on the assets so I have to change the phrase a little bit and it becomes “Hit the nail on the head”.
First Version
I thought of using the primary colours because it is striking and playful. It makes the hammer more obvious that it was made from the letter a and something long. The problem is with the poster where I could not make it feel encouraged for people to do what they want so I researched more into the hammer and found out about Russian Constructivism. So I change the colour to something similar and it becomes my final version.
