Klezmer Music from the Shtetl

  • Barbara Brennan

One hour program of Klezmer music (mer/weniker = more or less), introducing the beautiful music and culture of Yiddish communities (town/community = shtetl) of Eastern Europe (mainly Ukraine and Poland) to a wider audience. In addition to the music, I tell stories behind the music, stories of love, life, death, fun and tragedy. The audience is invited to ask questions, which makes the concert memorable. I spent a number of years researching the music, background, importance to Yiddish life in the early 20th century and relevance to us in the 21st century. Thanks to my Yiddish language skills, I can also introduce people to the warm and fascinating language spoken not only in the shetlech, but also by Jews in America and worldwide, descendants of emigrants from Eastern Europe.
