Kulturhavn Competition Entry

  • Ross Aitken
Kulturhavn is Europe's largest harbour festival, a yearly event that plays host to a variety of creative and cultural activities, all taking place on the picturesque waterways of Danish capital Copenhagen.

Each year there is an open call for submissions to design the festival's poster. The design must be versatile and able to work in both landscape and portrait formats, as the winning entry is also used on a variety of other promotional materials such as billboards and the festival brochure.

This year, the competition was made open to participants from outside of Denmark for the first time, resulting in almost a thousand submissions from 75 different countries. For my entry I aimed to create something bold and eye catching that would appeal to all ages but which was also in keeping with traditional Scandinavian design aesthetics. The result was the creation of a custom typeface that suggests the festivals harbour location without the need for specific imagery that can also be adapted to work across different formats.
