Ladies & Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones

In the Autumn of 2017, the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art hosted a two-day symposium focused on the life and portfolio of Grace Jones. ‘Ladies and Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones’ took the form of an academic conference and It’s timing coincided with the 40th anniversary of Jones’ first album. The School of Design invited me and two other design students to pitch for the opportunity to brand the event. We created a small team of designers from the first to the third year to work on a creative concept, and rollout across various mediums; such as posters, animation and merchandise. Our concept revolved around the idea of identity and personal expression. We experimented with iconic images of Grace Jones to see how far we could distort them before they were no longer recognisable. This led to a 10x10 ‘pixel’ grid which formed the foundation of our identity and led to the over-arching retro styling of our collateral (which is relevant to the time that Jones’ first album was released).
