Life in England

  • Gloria Wong

I am an artist who is passionate about all aspects of art. I have worked in portraits, animals and landscapes using charcoal, acrylic and watercolour. I don’t limit myself to an artistic niche - if I like something, I go for it. I started teaching art in drawing and painting in 2016. I have experience working with children, teenagers and adults. In 2018 and 2019, I held my own drawing exhibition alongside the work of my students in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. After 3 years, I am very lucky to be holding this art show here in Bristol, my new home. When I arrived in London in 2019, I only had my charcoal and watercolours with me. I really missed my cats back in Hong Kong, so I started painting them. Unfortunately the pandemic then happened and we were not allowed to travel. During the first lockdown, I spent every week exploring London’s forests and parks. Inspired by this, I painted two series of landscapes - both set in Epping Forest in London. Further inspired by my longing to travel when we were not allowed to, I painted some of the places that I’d visited in the past. Here you can see my depictions of Paris, France and Kagoshima, Japan. I've also captured the faces of some of the people who have inspired me since moving to the UK. This includes a portrait of Mike who runs Hennesseys Coffee Shop in Bedminster. He is my first friend that I met in Bristol. His portrait and more can be seen in my portrait series. I am also glad that one of my paintings (North Street - representing the secret Bristol) was a cover of the student magazine in 2022. I am now a barista in Bristol, in this very cafe. If I am not painting with paint then I am painting with coffee and milk through my latte art. Art is always all around us.
