Liminal Foundation, 2015

After years of rampant growth huge swaths of land lays primed for development. Sheet metal plot dividers serve to delineate prospective areas of development and to advertise their future possibilities. Only a few years ago this land was forest, but now it is a barren bulldozed desert.

These large temporary structures radiate light into the cold dry desert environment, standing as markers of progress, or the promise of progress. And just as blind ambition will slowly fade these structures will become muted symbols growth and progress.

Shot over a period of three weeks towards the end of 2014 in Beijing, China, these large sheet-metal fence are a common feature of Chinese construction sites. Some stay bare for years, their sheen slowly fading, the majority though are quickly covered advertising and propaganda slogans.
