The Film Love is a Rebellious Bird That Nothing Can Tame after Carmen Habanera is a dance film that uses the form of choreopoem that embodies poetry with movement, dance and music. The genre choreopoem was coined by Ntozake Shange after her first work and acclaimed theatre piece called “For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow isn’t Enough” which premiered in 1975. It consisted of a series of poetic monologues that were accompanied by dance movements and music. The poem is an extract from the book Pepper Seed (2013) by Malika Booker and is her interpretation and personal experience of love, loss and abandonment.
