Mala Design Tote Bags

  • Jitesh Patel

Mala is a brand created out of harmony. The word Mala translated from Sanskrit means Garland. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting a Mantra. I travelled through South East Asia around the summer of 2007, during that time I bought a Light canvas tote bag. A tote bag was not something I had not seen or owned before, and it was the perfect type of bag to carry a few of my essential items while I was travelling. When I returned back to my hometown London I noticed more tote bags being used as an alternative to plastic bags. I liked the reusable concept of the bags as well as the bold graphic messages. I started a blog to showcase these bags. Due to the popularity of the blog, I had a feeling I should write and curate a coffee table book showcasing some of the best tote bags from around the world. I approached Laurence King Publishing who believed in my vision and Idea. The Tote Bag Book was published in 2011. Tote bags have a place, and they are a personal fashion staple. It was this reason I have created Mala. The design and manufacturing of Mala are all done in the UK. I design the tote bags in my East London studio, taken from my experience from working in fashion. The bags construction is all hand crafted. The silkscreen print design has been hand pulled at a South London print studio. The leather handles are sourced from the UK, that are each cut by hand. Each bag has a unique hand crafted ceramic branded label, made in a ceramic studio in South London. The Mala tote bag is manufactured in Nottingham, the north of England.
