Mangrove Planting

  • Yolanda Thein

After our community lead day of our coastal clean up, the highly anticipated day of planting the mangroves arrived. The site we chose to rehabilitate has a nursery on site and we prepared 1600sqm of land with bamboo sticks spread out evenly so that the transportation of the mangrove propagules would be done smoothly during low tide, making it readily accessible for the students to burrow a hole and plant!

Setting up the 'support system' bamboo sticks for each allocated spot the propagules will get rooted in.
FUN FACT: AT AROUND AGE 5, A MANGROVE TREE WILL STORE A MINIMUM OF 5 TONNES OF CARBON. BY 2025 THIS SITE WILL BE SEQUESTERING A TOTAL OF 22,500 TONNES OF CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE TREES WE PLANTED!
