Materiality Exposed

  • Jessica Miller

Online exhibition created for my postgraduate Major Research Project. Digital and digitised 35mm film photographs by me presented in an exhibition exploring the materiality of photography. The digital age has transformed our way of taking, looking and experiencing both digital-born and traditional analogue photographs. Materiality Exposed explores the materiality of photography, defined through three key moments: the photographer’s experience of taking the photograph, developing the photograph and the photograph’s life once released to the world through its many forms. From the darkroom, lightbox and photo album to screens and Instagram, as viewers we don’t often consider the stages of the photographic process that brought it into existence. Whether printed on paper or shared on a screen, our focus is drawn to the visual subject within images we are presented with. Exhibited digital and digitised 35mm film photographs consider the changeable, flowing qualities of the image that encapsulate material, process and experience. www.materialityexposed.com
