Mother Tongue

  • Mia Swain

For my Masters major project, I focussed on language and idioms. I explored the imagery around common idioms and how they change in different dialects and cultures. This project is both an exploration and celebration of phrases and the art of chit chat. ‘Mother Tongue’ is an interactive, exhibition concept and research publication of idioms and expressions. To pay homage to one of the earliest forms of printed communication, I used a newspaper style format to document common idioms in different languages. The grid structure takes inspiration from traditional data layouts, and the combination of found imagery plays into the idea of everyday, vernacular design.
