Music Laboratory

  • Leo Chapman

In this piece I explore methods of deconstructing instruments in order to disassemble the rigid structure of music itself. I am dismantling the traditional method of playing music by exploiting instruments as sound reservoirs. My piece is almost scientific in its process: my performance space is a laboratory, and my materials are test subjects. My piece strives to transcend the confines of traditional music study and performance. As the instruments are dissected, their identity in the ordinary music world becomes obscured, and they mutate into a new species of sound instrument. I am interrogating the exclusivity of music by deconstructing and destroying instruments.
