NATAAL

NATAAL is a new global media brand that showcases inspiring fashion, music, visual arts and culture shaping global African creativity today. NATAAL approached BRITISH STANDARD TYPE to create a bespoke typeface for use across its publishing platforms and biannual magazine.

BRITISH STANDARD TYPE was commissioned to produce a headline typeface that celebrated African culture and supply a highly-recognisable typeface that would stand them apart from other publishers. Made alongside the design of the first issue of NATAAL magazine, a humanist sans serif with unusual reverse contrast and distinctive stylistic alternates was created. The alternating character sets with narrow and wide letters lead to an arresting texture that can be employed to create a unique rhythm and endless combinations for editorial design.
NATAAL entered the publishing space with global distribution and quickly gained a dedicated following. The typeface is successfully deployed across the breadth of NATAAL’s platforms to become a distinguishing feature of its unique cultural identity.
