Natural Beauty, Lodestars Anthology

  • Emma Latham Phillips

"At Punta Pájaros, nature is never silent. You are immersed in it. Even when I close up the villa’s walls and set the shutters, I can hear the restlessness of the ocean. Created by architect Alberto Kalach and environmental engineer Luis Urrutia, the project is regenerative; it gives rather than takes. Land once degraded by the agricultural industry has been renewed, replanted with native flora and allowed to grow naturally." I was commissioned by Lodestars Anthology to travel to Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Here I wrote about my stay at Punta Pájaros and my visit to Casa Wabi. The writing is accompanied by my photographs.

"Punta Pájaros was built in conjunction with Fundación Casa Wabi, an art foundation located a short walk down the beach. Established by artist Bosco Sodi, the organisation aims to bring art to those who do not usually have access to it. Artists in residence collaborate with local communities on creative projects that are mutually beneficial; a dialogue is created that goes beyond language and offers both participants new ways of seeing."
