The Design for Textiles programme at Heriot – Watt University has an outstanding reputation for producing graduates who are both ready for Industry and those ready to challenge the textile design discipline. Facilitated by our superb workshops and airy studios the programme covers developing skills in designing and making through specialist disciplines in printed, woven and knitted textiles developed with a strong knowledge of digital techniques and practices. Based in the Scottish Borders and the home of heritage luxury brands the programme encourages students to both respect and utilise traditional hand processes as well as experiencing and gaining a knowledge of the latest specialist digital software packages and production methods. Teaching staff encourage students to consider environmental and ethical issues in order to help develop their own creative “ handwriting” applied to the development of unique collections of designs or series of art pieces. The programme has a long standing reputation for the quality of teaching and student satisfaction and was rated at 89% in the 2019 NSS for overall satisfaction. The programmes has a long standing reputation for collaborations with Industry partners and regularly wins competitions and our students often awarded bursaries from professional bodies and Worshipful Companies. This year we were delighted to be awarded the “ The Designers Guild Plaque” in The Bradford Textile Society Competition presented to a university/college or to an individual for outstanding work.
