Making is central to the BA Hons Ceramics, Jewellery and Silversmithing students of Belfast School of Art, Ulster University. Our students explore a range of materials, formats and technical processes. This year’s degree work ranges from sound sculptures in slip-cast porcelain to jewellery combining precious with organic materials and innovative plastics. Our metalwork students have embraced traditional hand skills, whilst also pushing materials to their boundaries. The positive role of craft in dealing with mental health issues has become increasingly recognised and students have responded to this challenge with tactile therapeutic ceramic objects. In these uncertain times, grassroots making is seeing a resurgence. The skills and knowledge our students have acquired over the last three years now seem more relevant than ever. We are confident that our Class of 2020 will make a dynamic and positive contribution to the creative industries as they launch their careers!
