Norwegian Wood - H. Murakami (Book and Vinyl Cover)

  • Beatriz Mateus

For a Penguin design competition, it was requested a redesign of the cover of Murakami's Norwegian Wood, accompanied by other outcomes. Given music is always present (in all actuality, most of his books), and each song accompanying a key moment of the book, I created a Vinyl collection to go with the cover. The envelope with the letters is a connection with the character's exchange throughout the book. The design has all of its inspiration in Japanese design and culture - the typography is vertical like its written in Japan - the font chosen has much to do with the letters in the book, and the illustration resembles the body of one of the characters being described as a cherry blossom tree, fading away - resembling their death.
