Fashion knows that sex sells. But those who sell sex are rarely given a voice. In my article for 1 Granary Magazine, I spoke to fashion commentator Caryn Franklin MBE, stylist Lakyn Carlton and fashion designer Anna Bolina (the latter pair were former sex workers). Together, we explored how sex work is constantly appropriated in fashion campaigns, runways and collections. As we know, society's moral compass is often reflected and influenced by the fashion industry. It's therefore unsurprising that designers have historically used sex work themed campaigns and collections to scandalize consumers. This is often controversial, offensive and lucrative. While sex work stereotypes pervade fashion history, actual collaborations and workers' input is almost non-existent. It's time for brands to authentically collaboration with workers and ensure that they benefit from the project.
