A symbol of resilience and strength, of identity and heritage. For thousands of years olive trees have been rooted in Palestinian soil. From the Jordan river to the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, the land in Palestine has the perfect conditions to enable olive trees to thrive and each tree is a testament to ancestral presence, perseverance and identity. ‘Even if we are at home, our heart is out there beating on the hills and plains where the olive trees are rooted.’ (Mongabay) Around 100,000 Palestinian families are estimated to rely on these trees as a source of income (Savouir Flair). Since 1967, nearly one million olive trees have been uprooted in occupied territories (The Slow Factory). The destruction of olive groves and trees is a tool used to deny Palestinian history and forcibly displace Palestines from their land. Sumud [صمود] translated as ‘steadfastness’ or ‘perseverance’ in Arabic is a term used by Palestinians to refer to their commitment to remain rooted to their land despite all efforts to drive them out. The olive tree, able to survive hundreds of years, is often seen as one of the most evocative symbols of sumud, representative of ancestral ties to the land.
