Orang Asli; 3 Days with the Temiar

  • Mz Thenga

Photojournalism project at the heart of Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia. The Orang Asli tribe, the Temiar are not estranged to outside influences but practice an ancient way of life. They are perhaps one of the most peaceful peoples on earth. Their harmony with the jungle is heavily disturbed by ever-encroaching palm oil plantations. We were also joined by the Mendriq tribe who share some of the sacred spaces in the area. Unfortunately, these important spiritual sites have now been destroyed. In retrospect, I like to think the project presents the adversity faced by the Temiar but also their courage and the intimacy they share with the land. My website includes a complete write-up of the environmental issues and the impact it has on the Temiar culture with the full series of photographs.
