Out of Context 'The Lost Laugh'

  • Naima Elbouihi

I am a freelance designer who has recently completed a BA in Textile Design. My Final Major Project at Central Saint Martins ‘Out of Context’ has explored the various ways of portraying my own experiences surrounding OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). The concept behind my project was inspired by the different ways in which intrusive thoughts manifest in my mind; and I have used my travels to Morocco as a way of depicting the juxtaposition between the disorder and the vibrancy of Morocco. I have used the bold and vibrant colours I found on my trip to showcase the playful aspect of Morocco; these hues also act as a contrast of the psychological confusion that I faced during my time there. I wanted the theme of my work to tell a story in which I used intricate yet abstract illustrations and bold colours to depict my intrusive thoughts to display the vividness, which feels very real to me. My final work involved the process of physically painting myself into my illustrative work. Blending the boundaries between my prints that are manifestations of my experiences with my physical body to create an uneasiness and feeling of illusion to the viewer. This is to help create a sense of space for onlookers to fully immerse themselves within my dystopian illustrations. My work defines my thoughts; the chaos within the abstraction (of which is very much in order to me) highlights my struggles with my own mind in everyday life. for Freelance work please contact me or follow my small business on IG https://www.instagram.com/nmmela.designs/?hl=en @nmmela.designs
