Outside In - Final Major Project

  • Imogen Ford

Outside In is a Final Major Project I independently proposed, researched, contextualised and designed for my final year of study at University Centre Colchester. The aim of this project was to bring the outside into the comfort of my own home. Through illustrating directly onto the wall I was able to design and illustrate a full-room sized mural. The purpose of this outcome was to visually raise awareness about the importance and significance of the local biodiversity in Sudbury, Suffolk. By introducing elements of local folklore, history, poetry and literature and juxtaposing that with accurate scientific fact I was able to create a rich and exciting final outcome. Through using simplistic monochromatic illustrations along with mark making, line work and elements of language I was able to create a visual experience for the viewer. Which not only provides an insight into the beauty and intricate nature of the context of my project, but the lack of colour and use of folklore allows them to derive their own meaning and interpretation from the graphics. Furthermore, although I produced and established this project whilst being locked down due to Coronavirus, I was still able to successfully curate and present my work inside my own home. Creating mural work is something I wish to pursue in the future and would be open to working for or with others to work on their ideas in the future.
