OVO - Helping Employees “Find their thing” and Contribute to Plan Zero

Ovo had launched their ambitious Plan Zero: a strategy for Zero carbon living, driven by People and Power. However, initial employee engagement was low. To truly be able to deliver it, we needed to develop a compelling story, and find ways to engage employees, taking on ownership of the plan and driving action towards achieving it.

From our initial employee research, we uncovered the insight that whilst employees were inspired by the plan, they didn’t know what to do. It felt too big - and intangible in the day-to-day. Conversely, the business recognised that Plan Zero couldn’t be delivered by individuals alone - it needed a groundswell of the collective.
The flagship annual “Ovo Week” provided a brilliant platform to launch a renewed focus on Plan Zero. We developed an engaging, involving campaign, along with a series of tactics to spur on participation.

The concept was simple - we’d help people “Find their thing” to help the planet, and help them take the first step with actions that week.

With everyone working remotely, it was even more challenging to engage, drive a sense of community and nudge action. We therefore worked alongside the Ovo team to prepare a comms plan and set of key tools.

These included the Wall of Things, a space where employees could post and share and the thing-o-meter, a personalised quiz that helped people find their “thing”. We designed, wrote and built it, delivering a powerful but fun tool that gave practical, tangible resources and actions.
The results were overwhelmingly positive. Engagement rates were high (70% for emails, over 50% for the thing-o-meter). Crucially, however, we managed to create a real sense of community and connection during a time when employees felt far apart.

4,191 employees found their thing on the thing-o-meter

752 photos were shared on the Wall of Things, which saw 5,256 likes and 6,392 site visits

73% of employees (on average) opened the Daily Bites emails

And as for Plan Zero? It’s early days, but the commitment shown in Ovo Week has given us a strong start. And, with 16 projects already developed in hackathons, Ovo are well on the way to continuing momentum.
