Paintings for 'Christie's Lates: Picasso, a 50-Year Legacy'

  • Freya-Marie Saleh

2023 marked the 50th anniversary since the death of the Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. The curator's at Christie's in London invited me to create artworks for an exhibition that celebrated contemporary responses to Picasso's legacy.

El Pablo, 2023, oil and cold wax on paper, 40 x 50cm.
Los Pablitos, 2023, oil and cold wax on paper, 30 x 40cm.

My research began with a trip to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona for some initial inspiration. I found that Picasso was always so heavily influenced by his surroundings, from the people in his life to the streets he frequented in the city. This encouraged me to go out into my surroundings and find somewhere that fuelled my creativity. One of my favourite spots in Barcelona is the Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera, the cactus gardens.

I created a series of sketches drawn from life to capture some of the figurative forms I noticed in the cacti.

The more I observed the plants, the more I personified them and gave them traits which I found appropriate when thinking about Picasso's legacy.
