Parallel Republic: The Art of Civil disobedience- (Fuse Art Space)

October- 2014: Curated the exhibition that contained painting, illustration, photography, film, animation, graffiti and music born of the Syrian uprising and the bravery of citizen journalists and artist-activists.

Parallel Republic: The Art of Civil Disobedience contains painting, illustration, photography, film, animation, graffiti and music born of the Syrian uprising and the bravery of these citizen journalists and artist-activists. The exhibition is fluid – as the conflict changes daily, front lines are redrawn and new forces enter the war, we will make room on the walls and in the rolling film reels for new work. Such a rapidly evolving situation cannot be frozen into a snapshot and captured on gallery walls without remaining flexible. Alongside the exhibition, we will be holding a number of events including several screenings of Syrian animation films, Tala Derki’s Sundance winning documentary The Return to Homs, and a host of Syrian short films including the winners of the Syrian Mobile Film Festival, hosted by Zaher Omareen. There will also be a panel discussion on the role of documentary, new technology and social media in protest and war.

Prallel Republic: The Art of Civil Disobedience, curated by Ibrahim Fakhri and Sarah Faraday, gratefully acknowledges and builds upon the work carried out through the exhibition “Culture in Defiance”, held at Rich Mix in London and the Prince Claus Fund Gallery in Amsterdam with thanks to Malu Halasa and Zaher Omareen. The phrase “Parallel Republic” is taken from Khaled Barakeh’s description of the digital approach to art, journalism and activism in Syria Speaks: Art and Culture From The Frontline (Saqi Books, 2014)
