Paros Mons

  • Jessica Steel

This collection of small sculptures and functional trinket boxes, showcase the first (in-house recipe) clay series from Late June. These interesting forms are created by layering volcanic parian porcelain recipes. This reactive process means the outer surface can vary from rolling contours to large extruded bubbles. These recipes are based on traditional Parian Porcelain. This is a self-glazing clay body with a pearl-like sheen, inspired by the native marble of the Greek Island, Paros. Inspiration for these volcanic porcelain recipes came around a few years ago when looking into images of unusual mountains and volcanoes on distant moons. The Apollo Missions, the Spirit/Curiosity Rovers on Mars, and the Hershel Space Observatory. Missions past and present, have all relied on technical ceramic materials. This project ignited in 2020 after a trip to Stromboli, an active volcano island in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily.
