Due to the massive wave of migration that has taken place since the fall of the communist regime, Western Europeans have been slowly coming to an understanding of the territory Romanians hail from. Dracula, stealing gypsies, poverty, bad orphanages and horse carts – are just a few specks of knowledge and misconceptions that some westerns have on this part of Europe. Through this zine I wish to help document and promote Romanian’s image abroad through its customs, but not by creating an artificial image of a picturesque fairy tale land were folk exhibitions have been unchanged, but by documenting the reality of rural Romania and its traditions and customs adapting to modern times and a cultural globalisation. As we are all becoming members of the same global tribe, it is essential for humans to seek to maintain and communicate their identity to the world. As ancient artefacts, manifestations and stories are being replaced due to a great deal of the global stimuli, the need to document these macro and micro cultures tied to a fascinating history. Using photography that I have taken during my travels in the Romanian countryside, this zine will be exploring local Romanian culture, society, & politics in a journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and approval regarding our roots and origins in a global context.
