Perfume: The story of a murder 18th century menswear

  • Morgan Chisnell

During my second year I learnt how to construct 18th century men's coat and breeches. This was for my own interpretation of Patrick Sskind 1985 historical fantasy novel Perfume: The story of a murder; following the protagonist Jean-Baptiste Grenouille and his incredible sense of smell. Themes of Innocence, Death and desire within the plot. My concept was based on Grenouille and his desire for control with he later realises he never fully will have; this realisation is shown on the costume as it starts to 'crack' and 'deteriorate'. I took inspiration from the rococo era prints and the contrast of light and dark colours to show he richness be he 'deteriorates'. I used a printing technique called stencilling to create the decorative design inspired by the rococo era. For the cracking as deterioration effect I experiment with many ideas finally using puff binding - costume breakdown technique. Painted over it.
