Period Poverty Campaign June 2019

A live brief set by The Case for Her and D&AD inspired me for this project, the goal was to design a Campaign to combat Period Poverty and end the stigma around periods. With Period Poverty now being a big issue in not only Third World Countries but the UK, as 1 in 10 girls cannot afford sanitary products and with over 137,700 girls have missed school because of the lack of products. This project inspired me on a personal level because I want the world to be more open and honest about period experiences, as well as encourage free sanitary products for all as I believe it is a basic right for every girl menstruating. My solution to this brief was to create an internationally recognisable symbol that can be displayed in spaces with public toilets to inform that there are free sanitary products available. The symbol needed to clearly communicate the service, and provide reassurance and security which is what I want the message of the campaign to be. The symbol includes an outline of a Sanitary Towel as every girl would immediately know what it was. As part of the Campaign I created posters to promote the symbol, but on top of that to try and encourage the discussion of periods. Additionally, I designed “Help Boxes” for schools to give out and have for girls who are of menstrual age which will include all the products you need as well as a flyer on what to do and where to get more information and Tote bags for people to have free to help raise awareness of the issue.
