Petition to Reform Sexual Harassment Laws in Creative Industries

  • Chloe Elms

I am campaigning and petitioning for the Government Equalities Office to look at the failing impact of the current laws on sexual harassment regarding creative employment, venues and events. https://www.change.org/p/uk-government-reform-sexual-harassment-laws-in-the-creative-and-live-industries UNDERCOVER POLICING IS NOT THE ANSWER! This is a call for the UK Government to evaluate the current laws in place to make mandatory training schemes and create physical and digital safe spaces for freelance workers, contracted employers and audience members to report and be protected from sexual harassment and abuse in creative spaces including festivals, venues, studios, offices, and classrooms. And reevaluate should plain clothed officers be allowed to monitor nightlife areas? Is there other motives to this campaign? As a musician, writer and curator, I feel afraid to pursue my passion because I don’t want to be attacked by a man in my place of work or leisure. 97% of women have experienced sexual harassment (The Guardian), including myself, and every woman I am friends with. 58% of people have witnessed sexual harassment at work (Musician’s Union). Especially for freelance workers, which are a huge portion of workers in the creative industries, there is hardly any legal support to report or be protected from sexual harassment. The general public who attend events and workers in creative spaces need more protection. This should include a mandatory designated place/person to go to report unwanted behaviour at all venues, offices, and creative spaces, mandatory training for all employees (freelance or contracted) before carrying out any type of work, and an efficient, legally enforced, digital reporting service where claims are followed up. We need to make the change for the future of women in the arts!
