Phonetic Alphabets of British Accents

  • Emil Dibble-Chwistek

Where we come from matters. Our origins form an important part of a distinctive personality, which can become a group identity when we share these origins. Our language, especially our regional accents is an expression of that distinctiveness. Taking the International Phonetic Alphabet, a set of symbols that linguists use to describe sounds of spoken language and designing it for regional accents allows accents to be heard. Instead of a standardised system for all sounds, regional accents will be able to express their identity and characteristics of their spoken language.
