Play the Fool

My BA knitwear collection was inspired by 18th century Jesters; more specifically the Italian Commedia Dell'arte character, Harlequin. I focused my research on the costumes from this period and the relationship between acrobatic, dance movement and clothing. I began working with elastics and stretchy viscoses to create samples and garments that are designed to work with the moving body and enable the modern day dancer to move freely without restriction; whilst still being visually inspired by elements from the Jesters/Jokers costumes. The classic Harlequin diamond design is also present throughout the collection, created by various mock ribbing techniques on a 12gge Dubied machine.
